skip to 19:20 for the theft.
TL;DR - once the drones get past 500km you can ecm them to break owner control, using a suicide griffin.
timestamped commentary in comments (not enough room)

==== HIGHLIGHTS ("lead target" theory: a diameter every 400m/s target velocity, crossing the 100km threshold)
03:37 - majorfreak is going in for his second bump, and has crossed the '100km' threshold where i begin to lead my target, which is going around 60m/s - which isn't alot so i start madly doubleclicking just on the edge of that 'select' circle around the orca.
04:43 - minorfreak crossed the threshold with target at 400m/s, meaning i'll have to lead quite a bit in order to lead the target. In hindsight i should have been doubleclicking just a circle's diameter away from the edge of that select circle. target goes up to 3400m/s
06:00 - majorfreak crossed the threshold with target at 200m/s, and with hindsight i should have been doubleclicking half a circle diameter away...we'll see how far off to the right i was real soon
10:52 - minorfreak crosses threshold with orca going 110m/s (in hindsight i need to doubleclick a quarter circle's diameter away from edge of circle)...we'll see if this theory is correct asap
15:33 - minorfreak just passed the threshold with orca going 2843m/s ...going by the previous theory, that would mean i'd have to double click 7 diameters away from the edge of the circle around the selected target. hmmm. except my intuition is watching the target's vector going almost away from me so in hindsight i was probably calculating in the lack of..."transversal" and actually guessed pretty darned well
17:54 - majorfreak passes threshold going 10,000m/s, with the orca at 30m/s ...in hindsight i should have definitely been doubleclicking a bit closer to the orca's select circle.

in some cases they will automatically get abandoned if you're really good at bumping and are able to get the orca outside of 500km from them as they are mining. it's very tricky to get the timing right tho so have the suicide griffin ready to go.

video is quite long, but successful...almost. just forgot to train up my targeting skills on the griffin pilot so he was only able to target 4 of them, and in the panic that ensued i could not brain, i had the dumb.
I'm sure if i was less shocked i could only target 4 out of 5 drones, i might have been able to recover quick enough to unlock the first drone and target the moving drone (the others having stopped) and hit ecm before i got Concordokken.

oh, i just realized why i wasn't able to activate the ecm...i'd forgotten to move them into the high slots and was hitting f1-f5 like an idiot. lol

but, hey..."Op success" and it only took half an hour which is probably perfect to catch afk miners flat footed. And, besides, mining drones don't have prop mods so the pilot would have been unable to rescue them once i had them 400km+...at that point it was full bumping adrenaline rush as i was able to get the orca up to a consistent velocity of over 816m/s

you'll notice i used a helios to keep on top of the lead drone as it returned...that gave my griffin a warp in...and the ability to know when the orca was beyond 500km.

============== anti-bumping tactics ===========
if you're actually running augmented mining drones i'd recommend some drone navigation mid slots, an active MWD plus a higgs anchor rig (it'll definitely dampen the bump and with faster drones...well, it would make stealing your drones well nigh impossible)
is there a rig for drone speed? i'm not sure. might want to check
