In this week's Sunday Longplay (Ep 1), Peter plays through the original Super Mario Bros in one sitting. It's an endurance challenge! Can he do it? Think of it as a full game walkthrough / complete gameplay - levels 1-1 through 8-4 and everything in between!
Come downstairs and have a seat with me on the couch right here in The Basement!
The goal of Sunday Longplay is to see a game played through to completion in a single video (usually somewhere near an hour) and listen to some casual solo commentary from Peter on a variety of topics (gaming, the game itself, life, etc). Let's see how this goes!

During the third generation of video game consoles, tutorials that explain the mechanics of the game were rare, and instead, they had to learn how a video game worked by being guided by level design. The opening sections of Nintendo Entertainment System games such as Metroid, The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. are all designed in such a way that players were forced to explore the mechanics of the game to be able to advance. Super Mario Bros. was the first side-scrolling video game featuring Mario, and one of the first video games directed and designed by Shigeru Miyamoto. Rather than confront the player with obstacles, the first level of Super Mario Bros. lays down the variety of in-game hazards by means of repetition, iteration, and escalation.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Miyamoto explained that he created "World 1-1" to contain everything a player needs to "gradually and naturally understand what they’re doing," so that they can quickly understand how the game works. According to Miyamoto, once the player understands the mechanics of the game, the player will be able to play more freely and it becomes "their game."
