In today's episode (Ep 1), we try to make sense of this bizarre game. It's confusing. It's seriously strange. It's quite weird. We also talk about what we'd do if we had a million dollars.
Dudes with Attitude was made by a company called American Video Entertainment. There's not much info available on the game, but we do know a few things about this company.
American Video Entertainment (Wikipedia)
URL
American Video Entertainment was a San Jose, California–based[1] software development company that developed unlicensed video games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The company developed two games on its own, Krazy Kreatures and Trolls on Treasure Island in 1990, and published 19 games altogether for the NES.
n January 1991, American Video Entertainment filed an antitrust lawsuit against Nintendo of America and its parent company, Nintendo. Seeking $105 million USD in damages and filed by antitrust lawyer Joseph Alioto, the suit alleged that Nintendo's use of technology to prevent unlicensed games from running on their Nintendo Entertainment System console violated United States antitrust laws. The lawsuit was settled three years later, under the terms of a secrecy order.
Dudes with Attitude is a puzzle game developed and published by American Video Entertainment. The player controls a face-like character called a "Dude" or "Dudette." The object of the game is to collect all the treasures in every level without getting killed by obstacles or running out of time. Players collect treasures by touching them only if they are the same color as the treasures; players can change their color by running over cup-like objects called "attitude converters." The game plays very similarly to (the Varcon Systems, Inc. game) Diamonds.
Here's a neat little trivia tidbit from Nintendo Legend

"This is the exact same game is Trolls On Treasure Island. Dudes With Attitude was released first, with the later Trolls game taking advantage of the license to use the likeness of those hideous trendy-at-the-time troll dolls."
Apparently there used to be a video review of this game by OmegaDef on YouTube (I can't find it - also, the quoted text was NOT family friendly - I cleaned it up a bit):

Okay, so this game is pretty awful. You are a ball with a face. You get to choose a character: Happy, Dude, Foxy, Babe, Patch, and Bozo. Patch has a mustache and eye patch, so he’s easily the best choice. First there’s what appears to be a Pirate map. Next you choose your location. Then you play a pretty stupid puzzle game where you change colors to collect corresponding colored gems while avoiding enemies. It might actually be fun, but the controls respond terribly and were programed by people who obviously didn’t care. I got fairly far, but then the difficulty got to be too much due to poor control. It’s worth noting that there is a level editor, which is pretty cool actually if you don’t mind the fact that no one on earth will ever play your terrible creation. This game’s title makes no sense, and my only guess is they were capitalizing off of the popularity of the California Dreams and their sweet theme song. I’m glad it only cost five dollars. It makes a nice addition to the museum, and I was bored today anyway. It is however not recommended unless you’re me, up at four in the morning, and just want to mess with someone.
The Basement is a dual commentary let's play Youtube channel - a duo of musical dads from Minnesota, USA. Family friendly gaming that's safe for kids, clean commentary and nostalgic experiences are our motto. . ? Kinda!
This is a bad Nintendo game. I mean, it's lousy. We don't recommend it. It's awful. Is it the worst game ever? Probably not. Do you want us to play it some more? Let us know in the comments below!
