0The latest and greatest form sw3dg (StarWraith 3D Games), which is not a mission based space simulation as a lot of their other games, but a free-roaming do-what-you-want kinda game; quite like X (albeit not as polished).
Very solid game, with cool game mechanics, especially navigation, which really takes a while getting used to and is absolutely mandatory in this gigantic universe!
Unfortunately the combat isn't all that great and fun. And you get money a little too easy, so just after a view hours you will have the best ship & upgrades that are available. Not that this will help you that much in combat, mind you; it's still darn impossible to fight on your own.
But you can do all kinds of stuff, like mining asteroids and selling the ore. Buying stuff cheap in one system and selling it in another. Doing missions that require you to clean solar arrays, or where you need to destroy asteroids. In War-Zones you'll get combat oriented missions like Search&Destroy, Patrolling, Escorting. Sometimes you would need to scan ships, or fetch containers from some place.
And because you only can have one ship (unlike X), you can customize the hell out of it: choose from several frames and choose if you want more crew members (which can enhance certain aspects of the ship like weapons), or more equipment or more chaff containers (to help you against missiles) or have more secondary hard-points for your own missiles.
Then you need to add an engine, shield, fuel tank, cargo-space and wings. All of which can be sized and placed as you want: wanna have small wings in the front and the cargo containers on top? No problem. Want you ship to be extra small, so you aren't likely to get hit? Also possible.
You can even customize your two primary weapons. The beam weapon works against lasers and the particle weapon is for the armor. You can only have one from every type and then you can change them to your play-style, like higher energy expenditure and higher damage.
