After my last little series of videos highlight the changes to combat in 1.9, I was intrigued by the new shield item and how it dealt with hostile mob damage.

Knowing there was a significant difference from 1.8 and sword blocking, but not knowing the exact difference, I decided to do some experimentation using every hostile mob I could think of in the game.

Some things may need further research or confirmation from other LPers, but there are some interesting changes to the dynamics of PvE combat in 1.9 via the use of shields.
