Exploring an Abandoned Copper Mill in the Desert
Strange things can be found in Google Earth satellite imagery. For the past several years I've been aware of an abandoned site out in the desert that defied explanation. I located the site while perusing Google Earth satellite imagery. Was it an abandoned mine? Was it some kind of mill? Or was it something else altogether? I finally made the trek out to the site to see what was there. From the looks of things, it turned out to be an abandoned mill. I found a lot of copper ore laying all over the place, so maybe copper was processed here from nearby copper mines. There was a big copper mine not too far away that has an 1800-foot vertical shaft, so maybe the ore from that mine was processed at this facility. I was unable to find any information about this mill site -- who owned it, what mines actually used it, and when it was built and subsequently abandoned.
UPDATE: This mill site was built in the 1970's by the Bristlecone Copper Company. It was a smelter that processed a few hundred tons of copper ore recovered from the nearby copper mines. It was abandoned in 1977.
