F1 2021 PC Benchmark on Windows 11 in native 4K - fast read speeds from an NVMe SSD during gameplay!
21The official release of Windows 11 is right around the corner, and with it being touted as the best operating system for gamers by Microsoft, we decided to benchmark our first game on the new OS.
We took a look at F1 2021 in native 4K and Ultra Settings with ray tracing shadows on, but with ray traced reflections turned off, and we made an interesting discovery with respect to the game's asset streaming from storage. (We turned ray traced reflections off to maintain good performance at native 4K, but also because we found that while RT reflections have some benefits, such as the car's halo and other parts reflection into its own body, overall the screen space reflections were more accurate and true to life, which is the opposite of what you'd expect.
We found that the game's read speeds from disk on an NVMe SSD peak at 439 MB/s (inside the tunnel on lap 2), which is almost the maximum speed of a SATA SSD, and over twice the maximum read speed of a mechanical HDD. So if you've got an NVMe SSD, and you own F1 2021, you can rest assured that the game will be putting your drive through its paces. This is the fastest read speed from disk we have seen in any game during gameplay.
On a HDD, the performance is the same, however, the game uses slightly more RAM (about 1.5 GB more) to make up for the slower storage.
This game offers a sneak peak into what the future of gaming might look like. With DirectStorage, we should see even higher read speeds from NVMe SSDs.
