Paper Mario was and is a very special game. While it wasn't the first role-playing game to star Nintendo's popular plumber, it was the first one to be produced in-house by a studio that wasn't already a legendary RPG developer, and the first to be set in a vast interconnected world rather than isolated individual maps. Super Mario RPG was a wonderful story, to be sure, but Paper Mario was an adventure.
