The steelaxe% run is the shortest speedrun in Factorio. It is a simple race to craft a steel axe. Any map settings (including a set seed) can be used. The map used was discovered by a player named Zulan who wrote a script to analyze large numbers of maps and rated them for their potential. Due to the excessive number of coal rocks in the starter area, the map allows for more complex strategies to be used.

In the past, the meta was defined by racing to build a lab and then simply hand crafting 50 red science packs and placing them into the lab. Eventually this meta shifted when I introduced the idea of deviating from the norm and grabbing the automation tech before getting steel. Using this strategy and a basic map, I was able to push the speed run time from around 7:20 to 6:59. This newer map allowed me to push the time down from 6:59 all the way to 6:31.

Note that the actual time in the title/video represent the accurate frame count of the run from initial render to the frame which the steel axe appears in the inventory. The splits are only a rough estimation.
