In H.P Lovecraft's story Shadow Over Innsmouth the conclusion of a harrowing tale of dark rituals and inhuman monsters began and ended with a reference to the government capturing or slaughtering all of the maddened cultists and bombing the Devil Reef where their aquatic god Dagon lived.
In the modern era there remains a highly specialized covert organization called Delta Green which continues the fight against the Great Old Ones and any other strange and dangerous phenomena threatening the United States and the world as a whole.
They are armed as well as they can be, but often sent into situations of complete unknown, either because the threats they face have not yet been enchanted by man...or because in this world knowledge is more dangerous than fear.
