Famicom Mukashibanashi: Shin Onigashima [Famicom Forelore: New Ogre Island] is a point and click adventure game co-developed by two Nintendo development teams: EAD and Pax Softnica.

Based loosely on the fairytales Momotarō and Princess Kaguya, the game is about two infants - a boy and a girl who are raised by an old childless couple who are prophesied for greatness. When the children turned 8 years old, an evil dragon suddenly appeared in the capital, turning humans into Oni [Japanese Ogres]. When the Oni overrun the village the children grew up in and capture their stepparents the kids set out to save the land and discover their origins.

During development, Shin Onigashima vastly exceeded the 64KB storage capacity of the FDS diskette medium. The solution was for the game to come on two double sided disks, the first game to do so The Disks were released several weeks apart, and each for less than what other retail FDS games cost. All told, Shin Onigashima set Japanese kids back around 4500 yen in 1987.

Nearly a decade after the Famicom Disk System release, an enhanced Super Famicom remake called Heisei Shin Onigashima was released for the Stelleview service, followed by a Nintendo Power Data Cartridge version. Unlike virtually all other Data Cartridge games, Heisei Shin Onigashima eventually also saw a full retail release as well.

Because of its genre and subject matter, Shin Onigashima was never released in North America despite its enormous popularity in Japan. In recent years, western gamers have been exposed to Shin Onigashima's music through the pseudo fighting series, Super Smash Bros.
