Released in the summer of 1987, Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic [Dream Factory: *heartbeat sound effect* Panic] was developed by Nintendo in cooperation with Fuji Television to promote its Yume Kōjō '87 event. The Arabian family created for the Yume Kōjō '87 event were used as the characters for the game as well, although all enemies were entirely created from scratch by Nintendo.

Like other Disk System games, progress could be saved to the disk, allowing players to continue where they left off later.

The following year, Nintendo of America ported the game to the NES and heavily reskinned the game with Mario universe sprites, the removal of any save system, and creating a confusing legacy on par with the Pocket Monsters Red/Green to Pokemon Red and Blue localizations a decade later.

Despite the fact that Super Mario Bros. 2 had been out for over two years on Famicom, Nintendo of America felt the game wouldn't be a good fit for NES, considering the game too difficult and too similar to the original. Yume Kōjō provided the perfect solution, and it was reskinned Mario 2 in the Americas, essentially ignoring the actual Super Mario Bros. 2's very existence and most kids were none the wiser.

Even today a lot of retro gamers still consider Yume Kōjō and it's NES sprite reskin the "proper" Super Mario Bros. 2.
