Fatal Inertia Game Sample - Xbox 360
Fatal Inertia is a futuristic racing game which was originally planned as a PS3 exclusive but ran into various complications (primarily associated with utilizing the Unreal Engine 3's technology with the PS3's architecture) and was first released on the Xbox 360 in 2007 by Koei (Canada). The game was eventually released at a reduced price for the PS3 as a download-only game in 2008 under the title of "Fatal Inertia EX", containing tweaked A.I. (making the game easier except on higher difficulties and advanced circuits), slightly improved weapon and craft physics, and a few new courses to race on. The game is a pretty good racer, if not a bit lacking in modes (but features a good Career Mode with several special events) and a bit generic, with good graphics, acceptable audio, and functional gameplay mechanics with one or two innovative aspects (using terrain obstacles as weapons, shaking off weapons unto other opponents, or altering terrain for shortcuts as examples). It takes place in the 22nd century where extreme sports are all the rage and competitors from all over the world compete for a chance at fame in the hottest and most dangerous "Fatal Inertia" racing events.
The game features six different environments divided into over fifty courses and four types of craft class which can be tweaked to a certain extent with different stats and looks (Phoenix Class, Aurora Class, Mercury Class, Titan Class). It also features a Training Mode to get a feel for the game, which is useful as it trains you on how to control different crafts and informs you of the multiple uses for the weapons you can earn on races, but the way it's structured is a little annoying. The game's weapons are also pretty interesting such as Weighted Explosive Magnets, Cluster Magnets, Rockets (for attacking or boosting), Force Blast, Smoke Bombs (don't really work on A.I. opponents), a Cable with multiple uses (latching opponents to terrain, using it to sling shot around or ahead tracks, etc.), Protective Force Fields, a malfunctioning EMP, and the cool Time Dilator (slows down time for everyone but the craft that uses it).
This is a video showing some of the game in action. This game should be a great cheap buy these days if you can find it, but if you don't own a 360, you can try downloading the PS3 version if you're into these kinds of games. Enjoy.
