FE Hack Reviews #8: Dream of Five (Revisited) by AstraLunaSol [CH 8A] - The Laid Back Episode
Y'know what? Maybe this chapter is boring and dull, and maybe the map looks kinda trashy, but at least it didn't overstay it's welcome like so many of the chapters prior, and at least I felt like I was accomplishing something in it (IE: Training Seren). For those reasons alone, I'm giving this chapter a passing grade.
I think it's good every now and then to give the player a breather chapter, and this chapter certainly has a laid back feel to it, gameplay wise. If the previous chapter was more panicky and challenging, I'd even say this chapter is a good follow up, but the last chapter was just tedious and bland.
I dunno, maybe it's cause I only got about 6 hours of sleep, or less, but something about this chapter felt... right. Even my commentary was pretty pleasant in this one, like if I was doing commentary on FE5 before I decided that I hated it.
I'd also like to compliment Furetchen for not trying to sugar coat or evade the subject of sexism. Granted, this is a fantasy world and it doesn't necessarily need to follow actual history and the sexism that occurred, but it's a breath of fresh air to see a game that's not afraid to rear the ugly face of prejudice.
And I know I complained about the chapter villain being completely one dimensional, but honestly, I think that complaint is invalid. I remember getting extremely annoyed whenever The Last Promise - another fire emblem hack - tried so hard to make every villain not seem like a douche, because it felt forced and unnatural, like if the game was desperately attempting to shove it down our throat that the enemy forces consisted of actual human beings too, and that "WAR IS BAD DOOD". But the thing is, sometimes villains just don't have enough screen time to show whatever complexity they have.
I especially liked how the villain's death quote was handled. It established that the villain, while a sexist cow, was a servant to his country, through and through, and it didn't feel forced. Compare that to most of the death quotes in The Last Promise and you'll see a huge difference in the quality of the writing.
