FE8 - No Mounts Low Turn Counts Run: Chapters 5 & 5x
New video in the No Mounted Units run through Sacred Stones, this time updated with chapters 5 and 5x!
Chapter 5 - cleared in 4 turns (26 total).
The multiple objectives in this map made it very hard. Some of the things to do are: kill the boss (the obvious one), visit all 4 villages to obtain the Guiding Ring at the end of the chapter, recruit Joshua.
With Seth (or a critriggy/ridiculously powerful Franz) this map can be cleared in 3 turns, and a full party would allow one to visit all 4 villages in that amount of time (Vanessa being irreplaceable thanks to flight). No Seth/Franz/Vanessa makes things a lot tougher for us, especially in navigation.
Reaching the boss isn't all that hard luckily. One rescuedrop chain involving 4 (!) male units brings Eirika to a position where, if she continues to use her full 5 move each subsequent turn, she will reach the AK boss on turn 4, so that one's out of the way.
There's one more problem remaining - the village all the way to the north is farther away than the boss, and requires Colm to also use his full 6 move (highest on the team until somebody promotes to the last tier - most likely Artur or Ross) each subsequent turn. This one's a huge problem because Colm got either 1 or 2 level-ups in his entire existence (not entirely sure, I think it's 1 at this point) - at least he's not doubled by Joshua.
Things get really bad for Colm on turn 2 when he's in range of Joshua, an enemy archer and a Soldier (WTA obv) any two of whom team up for an easy KO with hit rates that are hard to deflect.
I used the "playing with death" trick to keep Colm alive here (and the next turn as well, where he not only risks being killed but gets surrounded by so many enemies that he's not reaching the village on the last turn) - namely, since Eirika is superior defensively/avoid-wise, she redirected Joshua/archer's unto her just because she was previously weakened (and deliberately not healed), while the Soldier runs away to attack Lute (Artur/Ross need to destroy two enemies to make way - neither of the two is fast enough to double yet).
Then there's another problem - having low move units reach the villages on time. The two bandits that appear on turn 2 can destroy the southern village on time and knowing how many units I need to achieve the aims I outlined above, Gilliam is the only who can get there, so somebody should distract the Brigands away to enable Gilliam to just barely reach the village. Since Natasha recruits Joshua and everybody else is needed for combat, that unit can only be... wait for it...
MOULDAH THE BOULDAH
He even needed to use an Elixir to survive to take an extra hit. 50/50 hit rates against him in the bushes.
What's funny is that I'm not even sure all the fuss to get the villages was worth it - it might be preferrable to postpone Artur's promotion until chapter 11 or so (letting him gain more magic through level-ups unpromoted), but it sure was difficult to accomplish alongside other mini-goals.
Chapter 5x - cleared in 11 turns (37 total).
This may well be the only two-digit turn count on this run (though with chapter 9 ahead, you can't be quite sure). Orson's presence can make for an 'easy' 7-turn completion and Kyle/Forde being added into the mix allow for 6 even; however, all three are mounted units so Ephraim has to do it alone.
I could say that Eph uses his full move every single turn, but that's not quite it. Once he has to go around a Fighter blocking his way, and on another occasion he needs to move one square less so as not to be attacked by an archer - Ephraim's counter will whiff on one of the attacks and the archer will block the way, costing more turns. Preventable by RNG abooz, but I didn't want to resort to that - plus it wasn't necessary since I could reach the boss on time for turn 10 enemy phase regardless.
As for the quality of Ephraim's level-ups, I think the video speaks for itself. It's a pity that Ephraim is absent for most of the game, because those are some killer stats (and in a run without mounts, that means a lot).
