Feeding wild monkeys in Kyoto! - Exploring Japan with Wageofsins
You can see the rest of the park here! • Iwatayama Monkey Park in Kyoto! - Exp...
Continuing the tour of Iwatayama Monkey Park (嵐山モンキーパーク) in the Arashiyama (嵐山) area of Kyoto, this video shows how you can feed the wild monkeys by hand if you enter one of the small buildings. This rest spot is a modest wooden structure that has all its windows covered in fences so that the wild monkeys that live up in the area can climb on and wait to be fed.

Visitors can buy a bag of either apples, bananas or peanuts for ¥100 and then hold them out for the monkeys to take. As they're very used to this, the monkeys will wait, arms stretched, hoping to get a nice snack. This is a fun and safe way to interact with what is other wise a wild animal that shouldn't be touched normally.
At the top of Arashiyama lives around 170 wild Japanese macaque! Because they stay in the area, each newborn is given a name and their date of birth recorded, as well as their parentage over each generation!
This is a really nice place to visit if you happen to be taking a trip to Kyoto and want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the regular tourist spots. This is also very close to the beautiful bamboo forest, which I recommend visiting as well.
The monkeys are generally very calm because they've grown accustomed to the visitors, and unlike a zoo, they are free to come and go as they please.
I recommend coming early before the crowds start, as it can get busy closer to the afternoon. The hike to the top is fairly simple, but is a bit of work out, so don't expect a paved road and wear comfortable shoes! The entrance fee is ¥500.
