I was completely misremembering previously when I thought that the war scenes were in Vietnam, that would've been the non-fictitious thing to go with. Instead, it's a war with Russia that happened before the events of the first game, which the game explains... only slightly, and rather poorly. So much of this game's story comes from fans putting the pieces together and setting it out in chronological order.
