Fester's Quest [PAL] (NES) Playthrough
Playthrough of Sunsoft's 1989 action game for the NES, Fester's Quest. This is the PAL version where bullets go through walls.
Fester's Quest, released by Sunsoft in 1989 for the NES, is an action-adventure game based on The Addams Family franchise, placing Uncle Fester in the unlikely role of a hero. When aliens invade Earth, Uncle Fester takes it upon himself to save the day. Armed with a futuristic blaster and a variety of gadgets, he battles through alien-infested streets, underground sewers, and other maze-like environments in a quest to eliminate the extraterrestrial threat. The game merges overhead exploration with intense combat, drawing inspiration from Sunsoft's other titles like Blaster Master while retaining its own quirky charm.
The gameplay is centered around exploration and combat as players guide Fester through interconnected levels filled with relentless enemies. Fester starts with a basic gun, but power-ups found throughout the game can upgrade it into more powerful versions with wider spread and range. However, these upgrades come with a challenge—many enemies drop downgrades that can revert the weapon’s power, requiring players to tread carefully. In addition to his blaster, Fester collects items like missiles, keys, and light bulbs, which serve critical functions, such as unlocking doors or illuminating dark passageways. The difficulty is notoriously high, with enemies respawning frequently, no continues, and a limited health system, making progress a test of both skill and patience.
Visually, Fester's Quest uses dark, atmospheric colors and detailed sprites that reflect its Addams Family roots, with eerie environments and quirky character designs. Fester’s trademark look—a bald head and grim demeanor—is faithfully captured, while enemies and bosses offer a more bizarre, alien contrast. Sunsoft’s strong track record for NES music is also evident here, with a catchy, upbeat soundtrack that keeps players engaged despite the punishing challenge.
While Fester's Quest is often remembered for its difficulty, repetitive design, and lack of save or password features, it remains a distinctive entry in the NES library. Its blend of exploration, challenging combat, and quirky Addams Family charm gives it a unique identity, appealing to players who enjoy old-school difficulty and unconventional premises. Despite its flaws, Fester's Quest stands as an ambitious and memorable attempt to bring a beloved franchise into the action-adventure genre.
