From Terence Fergusson's Battle Mechanics FAQ:

When overflow occurs, if the damage is now in the negative range, then the attack will automatically kill the enemy - this occurs because negative damage subtracted from an enemy's HP actually *increases* their HP, but FF7 believes that any attack that does damage *and* causes the enemy to have more HP than they started with must have been so strong as to overflow HP.

Please note that attacks that enemies absorb to heal themselves are handled differently - the game uses positive healing numbers and a special flag to note the use of healing. However, negative healing, caused by the same overflow above (which can happen with use of HP Absorb, for example), will often kill the unlucky victim instantly due to a different bug.

The reason why this battle doesn't have a countdown is because I already defeated Emerald on the only file I had available at the moment, so I had to use a code to enter the battle. This doesn't affect anything.

Music: Something appropriate.
