In this video, I talk about the claim that a Wing Chun practitioner on their back is useless. It's just not true, and here is why.

DISCLAIMER: This idea does not originate from me. Randy Williams talked about Wing Chun ground fighting back in the 90s and maybe even earlier.

ABOUT THIS VIDEO: I am certainly not the first person to say Wing Chun can be used on the ground. Hopefully I won't be the last either.

I am so sick of teachers who, when you ask them how to use Wing Chun on the ground, say things like, "If you are on the ground, you've lost the fight. Just don't get there."

What kind of defeatist attitude is that??? So the second my back touches the ground, all the fight goes out of me? How is that anything even close to a survivor or warrior mentality? Get the f*ck outta here with that nonsense.

These people need a reality check. When you are first learning Wing Chun, odds are you will not be able to stop a grappler from taking you to the ground. Therefore, they are doing their students a disservice by not showing them ground defense.

That is why I appreciate Randy Williams so much. He stands out in the crowd for that reason alone. It helps that he has other skills beyond that, but even if all he had was his "Wing Chun can work on the ground" stance, he'd still be unique.

I have never watched a full video from Mr. Williams on ground fighting. However, I did read his articles back in the day of INSIDE KUNG FU magazine. Also, courtesy of Sifu Larry London and his teachings of the Leung Sheung lineage, I have my own understanding of how a Wing Chun person could still generate power, even if they were on their back.

Watch and enjoy.
