Fighting of School - a 2D Fighter Maker 2nd game with a Neo Geo Pocket Color-based presentation developed by Brazil-based Giovanni Games (with assistance from Ulisoft) - received its "final" update on October 2024. Outside of increasing knockback from some attacks(?), which slightly mitigates the ability to do easy infinite combos from chaining light attacks, gameplay is largely unchanged, featuring a simple control scheme, somewhat slow-paced gameplay, and the ability to taunt the opponent to deplete their life bar.
The game's story is finalized, though, and while the intro sequence that explains the game's premise is present in earlier versions, I skipped it in my previous playthrough due to how my videos are formatted (woops). Anyways, Fighting of School's story involves the criminal organization Line Gear, which began hosting a fighting tournament (the "Battle Knuckle Fighting Tournament" ) as a front to lure competitors into becoming minions of the evil Dr. Willian Monark, the game's main antagonist.
Today's character, Naomi Moyashi, has plans to become the strongest in the world. With her previous experience with practicing martial arts ever since she was young, Naomi joins the tournament, hoping to prove her strength while also obtaining fame and money on the way. Meanwhile, Dr. Monark has kidnapped Daniella Beatriz Hoshida, the sister of main protagonist Giovanni Hoshida, and he is currently trying to brainwash Daniella into being his minion.
Eventually, after working her way in the tournament (including having a rematch with Wad Patrick), Naomi encounters (and defeats) Dr. Monark in Line Gear's secret base of operations, before a berserk Daniella breaks through containment. Naomi defeats her too, and the game ends with Naomi having lost the tournament for an unknown reason, despite defeating its host (and gaining some decent prize money). Was she absent from the actual final match, or is another character (like Giovanni) canonically the winner of the tournament? Naomi's ending then concludes with her saving some kid from some bullies she found on the street (who were harassing the kid for money) by beating these bullies.
Fighting of School is overall an unique experience. It's not well-polished - the easy infinite technique still exists in some form and is the only way to deal half-decent damage (as otherwise standard combos deal little damage) - and the presentation in of itself isn't that noteworthy IMO, but despite these issues playing this game was pretty fun. Seeing that Giovanni Games plans to take a break after releasing this game, I wonder what project they will be doing next...
