SUPER FIGHTING HEROES is a simple fighting game developed by Butō Gakuen Eizō Kenkyū-bu (lit: Martial Arts Academy Video Research Club).

SUPER FIGHTING HEROES at its core plays similarly to Street Fighter, with slow gameplay (despite running being an available mechanic in this game) and more emphasis on footsies. In addition to standard attacks, there's also a special button to perform special moves without motion inputs (SP), a button to instantly run (DA), in addition to a button dedicated to super attacks and the game's Tension Trigger state, which I'll get to later (SA).

SUPER FIGHTING HEROES's core mechanics include different fighting styles: the N-mode and the A-mode (which can be selected in the lower half of the character select screen). They both can use EX special moves (which uses up guard meter), tech throws, parry opponent attacks to punish them effectively (done by pressing back exactly when the opponent attacks), and guard cancels to escape pressure (during blockstun, press START). The aforementioned guard cancels in addition to super attacks requires meter - guard cancels use up one bar, whereas super attacks could use one to two bars, with stronger versions of the same super attack using two bars and dealing more damage.

The game also has the Tension Trigger state (activated by pressing the SA button without any directions), which enables certain abilities depending on your fighting style. Universally, you can cancel special moves into super attacks, which are now called Critical Arts under this state despite seemingly working the same like any other level 2 super attack. A-mode characters have running and backdashes locked behind Tension Trigger, but could cancel normal attacks into Tension Trigger activation to continue pressure and/or combos.

Overall, while the game in of itself is perfectly fine, it doesn't appeal to my taste in fighting games. The fact that you can't do juggle combos in this game personally turns me off, especially since knockdown animations look as if you could continue hitting them. Movement is also a bit too slow for my taste. Still, while I don't really like playing this game, it's still decent enough to check it out, or at the very least keep tabs on the game, as SUPER FIGHTING HEROES is listed as a test work (i.e. work in progress).

The game's story involves a martial arts tournament to determine the strongest person in this world. This tournament in particular is noted to be the tournament every aspiring fighter dreams of competing in at least once, and has a wide variety of participators, from martial artists and underworld assassins, to police officers and even demons. In-game that means defeating seven opponents, including "???" who is basically diet Akuma.
