The Binding Coil of Bahamut (大迷宮バハムート, Dai Meikyuu Bahamūto) is a dungeon in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, available after the first main storyline is completed.
In the aftermath of the Battle of Carteneau, a fragment of Dalamud landed on an area of land on which a force from the Garlean Empire build the fortress Castrum Occidens on. After the declaration of the Seventh Astral Era, Alisaie Leveilleur recruits the Adventurer to aid her in not only exploring the Binding Coil of Bahamut to discover the fate of both Bahamut and her grandfather Louisoix, but to ensure Garlean forces do not obtain the Allagan technology that Dalamud's still active defensive systems possess.
Louisoix Leveilleur is a prominent non-playable character in Final Fantasy XIV. He is the leader of the Circle of Knowing, a group involved in the Seventh Umbral Era storyline. He is most notable as the NPC involved in all quests related to Primals in version 1.xx. He is voiced by David Lodge. He is the grandfather of Alphinaud and Alisaie Leveilleur.
Once the final battle before Dalamud's fall began, Louisoix supported the Eorzean Alliance in battle, protecting its combatants from Bahamut's rain of destruction with several spells. However, as Dalamud shattered and Bahamut escaped its imprisonment, all he could do was teleport the adventurers with an unknown spell, before the dragon's Megaflare ravaged the entire battlefield and presumably killed the majority of the people present in the area, including Louisoix.
During the aftermath, his shattered staff was recovered by Kan-E-Senna and returned to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn (the successors to the Circle of Knowing), where Minfilia kept it in her office.
The Binding Coil of Bahamut dungeon features musical themes based on Answers; the main theme of the dungeon called "Odyssey" shifts between a quiet, atmospheric version or a more dramatic version with heavier instrumentation based on whether the party is in combat with monsters, and the dungeon's "boss" theme also uses strains from the song in certain sections, though it is less obviously based on Answers.
Bahamut is the King of the Dragons in the original Final Fantasy. He lives in a subterranean network underneath the Cardia Islands, and grants the class change to the Warriors of Light after they bring back a token of their courage from the Citadel of Trials.
Bahamut (バハムート, Bahamūto), sometimes known by his epithet "The Dragon King," is one of the most prominent summons in the Final Fantasy series. He has appeared in several installments, as well as his own game, Bahamut Lagoon. He also appeared as an enemy in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars with the name of Bahamutt, in addition to being the namesake for the Sky Fortress Bahamut in Final Fantasy XII. In the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, there are several species of Bahamut.
His attack, Megaflare, sometimes translated as Sun Flare, deals non-elemental magic damage which ignores defense and evasion. There are, however, other variations to Megaflare corresponding to different appearances of Bahamut, including Tera Flare, Giga Flare and Exa Flare to name but a few.
Unbeknown to Eorzea's inhabitants, Bahamut had been incarcerated by the Allag civilization inside Dalamud, an astral body orbiting Hydaelyn believed by many at the time to be a secondary moon. However, the knowledge of the moon being passed down her family for generations, the Garlean Empire's Nael Van Darnus fanatically schemes to bring down Dalamud on Eorzea via Project Meteor to wipe out the realm's Primals and inhabitants. Though Nael seemingly died to fulfill that desire, Dalamud continued its descent with Bahamut finally breaking free by the time the Battle of Carteneau occurs. Freed and enraged after eons of duress, Bahamut begins the Seventh Umbral Era by unleashing his wrath upon the realm.
