TRANSCRIPT HIGHLIGHTS:

Final Draft claims that it’s used by 95% of film and television productions.

You can’t go WRONG with Final Draft--it’s a great platform for beginners and advanced screenwriters.

Why? Let’s dig deeper to find out...

On today’s video, I’m reviewing the industry standard for screenwriting--FINAL DRAFT so that YOU can decide whether or not it’s right for YOU.

I’m Jay Sherer, author of the time travel novel, TIMESLINGERS, and co-writer and producer of STAR WARS: RIVALS, the fan film…

Here’s who SHOULD use FINAL DRAFT, and who SHOULDN’T...

I started using FINAL DRAFT in college way back in 2003--which was before smartphones were invented--and I used Final Draft for YEARS.

Back in the day, Final Draft was one of the only options. But now, there are a LOT more competitors.

Does Final Draft hold up?

I think it does, but some of their competitors are also worth looking at.

There are two types of screenwriters who should use Final Draft: beginners who are learning to write and format screenplays, and professionals who work with production studios that have chosen Final Draft as the go-to software choice.

In the latter case… those screenwriters don’t have much of a choice.

Final Draft works really well for beginning screenwriters because it allows them to become familiar with classic formatting.

To be clear… Final Draft won’t TEACH you how to write your script, but it works well as a complement to people who are learning.

My more recent experience with Final Draft has been their IOS app.

And it’s a solid option. For one, it’s cheaper than the desktop version--and by a good margin.

The user interface is intuitive and helpful, and the feature set is extensive.

The experience on the app feels complete--like you could do everything you would want to do in the app without needing the desktop version.

My biggest complaint with the app--which is true of all the screenwriting apps I’ve ever used--is that it crashed way more than I would have liked. It’s consistently saving the file, which means the impact wasn’t extensive, but it was still frustrating.

Nathan, my writing partner, was also frustrated by how Final Draft breaks a lot of standard Mac user interface conventions.

Here are some Final Draft pros and cons:

PROS:
It’s the industry standard, which means you can’t really go WRONG by choosing it.
It has a long history of marketplace dominance.
It’s a great complement to writers who are new to screenwriting.
And it has both a desktop version and a very extensive mobile app.

CONS:
The user interface feels a bit dated, particularly compared to some competitors.
The same thing can be said of the notes feature, which is a big feature for Nathan and I. We share a lot of notes back and forth, so that’s critical.
There’s no Android app available.
The IOS app does have a tendency to crash.
And… it’s expensive.
