Screenwriting 101: How to Write a Screenplay for a Short Film - Part 2!
Stories are all about CONFLICT. And as we continue to work on our short film screenplay, we're moving into page 2 and Act 2. Today, I'll dig deeper into page 2 of the Star Wars: Rivals short film script in order to determine how to write a short film. I use my own work (which I co-wrote and co-produced) to describe how writers can construct their own short film scripts. Are you working on a short film script or even a feature length screenplay? Comment and let me know! And if you've got questions, ask away!

TRANSCRIPT HIGHLIGHTS:
Screenwriting 101: How to Write a Screenplay for a Short Film
You want to write a Star Wars short film? We’ve already taken a look at page one--if you haven’t seen that video yet, start there.
In this video, we’re going to talk about Page Two and the importance of CONFLICT. Topics today include:
- The beginning of Act Two and…
- Escalating the CONFLICT.
I’ll go deeper into those, and more… in today’s video.
What’s up, Storytellers and Star Wars fans...
I’m Jay Sherer, author of the time travel novel, TIMESLINGERS, and co-writer and producer of STAR WARS: RIVALS, the fan film…
I’ve co-written three short films, co-produced two of those, and written around a dozen or so short film scripts.
On today’s video, I’m continuing our series on HOW to WRITE a Star Wars short film. We’ve already covered the first page and a half of the script, and today we’re digging into pages TWO and THREE.

1.5 Pages = ACT ONE
ACT ONE WAS ALL ABOUT SETUP.
SETTING UP THE TENSION: Two sisters who are mourning their dead father and now competing to become Master Cuthar’s apprentice.
We also setup that the two sisters are half-sisters, which we’ll explore some more here in ACT TWO.
Before we dig deeper into specifics, let’s take a look at the finished film BEFORE we jump into the script. Here’s the finished product of what was included in the portion of the script we’ll be talking about today.
All right, let’s get into the script…
FRUSTRATION - CORE TO SKYE’S JOURNEY
FEAR IN ACT ONE, FEAR AND FRUSTRATION IN ACT TWO
OVERT BULLYING - NOT ENOUGH TIME FOR MORE
THE DIFFERENCE IN SKILL
THE PROMISE OF MORE CONFLICT
MID-POINT: ANGER
Now that we’ve talked through the script in more detail, let’s watch that portion of the film again...
Now, for today’s takeaways...
TAKEAWAYS:
CONFLICT. CONFLICT. CONFLICT. ACT 2 IS ALL ABOUT CONFLICT.
KNOWING YOUR TIME LIMITS--BULLYING COMES IN FAST.
PROMISE MORE CONFLICT--SKYE’S MOM, UPCOMING FIGHT, and ANOTHER LIGHTSABER…
USE YOUR SPACE WISELY--NOT A LOT OF ACTION DESCRIBED HERE.
One more PRO TIP: STAY TUNED...

AND, my FINAL pro tip: NOTICE HOW THE TENT ITSELF WAS NEVER DESCRIBED. We knew that the director and the production designer were in conversations, and Nathan and Scheck and I--as producers would get to review the designs relative to the final product.
