REVIEW: 3/5

Final Fantasy III largely follows in the footsteps of the series' origin, as opposed to the radically different system that was used for II. Back to the roots of a nameless party composed of four jobs, (classes), of your choosing and spells were limited to a certain number of casts per rest as opposed to using a set amount of mana. I had no issues with this in the first game, and it's more than serviceable here as well, but I was a little sad to see FF II's system of gaining experience per skill so quickly abandoned.

The main difference between Final Fantasy I and III is that III leaned a bit more into the story aspect. You see a little more uniqueness in its ideas and plot elements, and the adventure is just more involved in general. Though for all intents and purposes my party in III was composed of the same blank slate that my party in I was composed of, it did feel like there was more character in this party, and comradery among itself. It made the game feel a little more grand in scope, and as a result, I was more engaged than in the original game.

I also enjoyed the freedom granted by virtue of swapping classes at a moment's notice. I loved being able to try out different classes and abilities on a whim, and I think it allowed for much more freedom when crafting my party. The fact that jobs had experience levels independent of your character level was an interesting piece was an interesting decision; they seemed to scale well enough that I didn't think my "new" classes were underpowered when I first unlocked them even though they'd be lower level, so I don't quite understand why it was implemented in the first place, but I digress.

For the most part, I really don't have much to praise III on that I didn't also receive. I think either entry could work interchangeably as an introduction to Final Fantasy if you wanted to play an early game in the series; III just has some quality of life features and an altered job system. That said, I'd probably still recommend the first game over the third strictly because it has a cooler final boss. The big bad of III really just seemed to come out of nowhere to me, and I felt no connection to its defeat.

The essence of Final Fantasy III is bar food; it's fine, it's nostalgic, and it's easy. No surprises, just the same old experience you're used to, but not in a bad way. Everyone gets cravings for something a little more familiar every now and then.
