Final Fantasy IV: Ultima is a hack by 8-bit fan that aims to present a more expansive version of the classic. New weapons, spells, bosses, and a modified overworld are just a few of the changes on tap.

The latest version of the patch can always be found here:

At Fabul now without too much to do. There's weapon & item shops along with an inn if you need them, but your target now is the throne room. Make sure to unequip Rosa before starting the cutscene.

The cutscene basically boils down to the guys taking the offense while the girls are in the backline assisting the medics. Seems simple enough.

For the battle gauntlet here, there's nothing real threatening to worry about. Just make sure to kill any Captains you run into before killing all of their Marine cohorts to maximize the exp you gain from battles.

Eventually, the battle ends up in the crystal room. There are no more Captains to speak of...but there is one old friend, Kain. Unfortunately, he feels like killing Cecil and claiming the crystal is a good idea. The Blood Sword only helps out when you can outdamage your attacker and not the other way around as Cecil gets his ass handed to him by his former friend.

When his friends try to jump in and help, Rosa & Rydia enter the scene as well. Five against one seems fair...that is, until none other than Golbez decides there's not enough people in the crystal room. Cue Cecil, Yang, and Edward getting their asses kicked, Rosa trying to talk sense into Kain once again only to get captured by Golbez, and Kain taking the crystal before making his exit.

Somehow, Rydia escaped injury and heals up the men. Things seem bad, but as Rydia states, Rosa can be saved (again!) and the crystal reclaimed. We'll just need to head to the inn to devise a plan.

Before doing that, check out the switch to the east of the king's throne. It opens a door leading to a Silk Web (casts slow on all enemies), Decoy (image status for user that makes the next two physicals on said character miss), and an Ether.

Upon reaching the inn, a plan's quickly devised. Baron may have a top tier aerial division, but their marine squadrons are weak. As such, we'll need a ship to sail over to Baron, something the king of Fabul happily arranges for. Also, he gives Cecil something a previous dark knight left behind, the Deathbringer, but warns a dark sword can never truly conquer over evil.

If the Blood Sword was basically a shoo-in for one of Cecil's weapon slots, the Deathbringer usurps that. It doesn't have the life leech capabilities of it, but it does raise all stats by 5 except for willpower which gets lowered by 5. Really good...oh, and toss a chance to instantly kill the target on top of all that I might add.

So, why not go for a Blood Sword/Deathbringer combo? It's viable, right? We'll see soon enough why that's not the case.

After checking a few more things around the castle, finding a few interesting items like the Bacchus' Wine (Makes the user berserk, meaning loss of control for said character and using only physical strikes, but said physical strikes will do enhanced damage), it's time to leave the castle.

Before hopping on the boat to the east of Fabul, everyone not named Cecil needs to be unequipped. Why? Baron doesn't attack the boat midway to its castle, but a serpentine ocean beast by the name of Leviathan does.

More next time!
