Final Fantasy IV: Ultima is a hack by 8-bit fan that aims to present a more expansive version of the classic. New weapons, spells, bosses, and a modified overworld are just a few of the changes on tap.

The latest version of the patch can always be found here:

Time to go searching for that Sand Ruby. The quest begins in a cavern to the north and east of Kaipo, a place called the Watery Underpass.

Nothing really threatening in the area enemy wise, just a few annoying enemies like CaveToads who can inflict frog, MiniMages who have very high magic defense and access to Psych (mp drain spell) and Hold (inflicts paralysis), and Zombies (basically immune to the dark element which all of Cecil's weapons have right now).

There's not much to the Watery Underpass to begin with. Just a few items (Potion, MaidKiss, Tent) before you reach an individual by the name of Tellah. Turns out his daughter ran off with some bard from Damcyan and he's not happy. However, there's a beast guarding the way to said area and he needs assistance in slaying him, thusly he joins the party...and is going to be killed off instantly. You see, he's not gonna be around for too long and he takes away exp that Cecil & Rydia both could really use. Being lv20 helps the case of killing him off instantly.

Besides that, Tellah is a Sage with access to both black & white classes of magic. Very limited selection right now, but what he has allows him to be an attacker or healer as the situation requires. Recall, his unique command, lets him cast a random spell. Not really worth the hassle to use.

There's a couple items to the east after recruiting Tellah (BombPart which is an attack item and a free IronRing). If you head into the water to get that IronRing, you can go southwest to a waterfall and find a hidden entrance to go inside for a few consumables (X-Potion, DryEther, Life).

After passing the first screen, it's a straight shot to the first save point with a couple consumables (Potion, Ether) off the beaten path.

As you reach the save point, a brief cutscene begins talking about Rydia's great potential down the road and the nature of the beast to be slain, a monster with eight tentacles.

After the cutscene ends, everyone is healed to full, Tellah included. A quick edit later to re-kill him and it's time to continue on. Linear besides a detour to grab an Ice Rod that Rydia should equip. When used as an item in combat, it casts Ice1.

On the third screen (B3F), there's a small detour for some gp and a BombPart. To the west is the way onwards with more straightforward paths to take featuring detours for items. Some, like the PlumeHat, is hidden behind a secret passageway. Others are just a simple walk to reach like...a Blood Sword. Yes, Cecil gets something like THAT this early. Basically, as long as he doesn't attack undead enemies with it, he'll be immortal with its life leech effect.

As if that wasn't enough, I picked up two rare items from battles. From a pack of Mini Mages and Water Hags, I got a Silver Seed, an item that raises max hp by 50, something Rydia will greatly appreciate.

The item I got from a pack of Zombies is equally interesting, a Cursed Ring. Seems useless when it's lowering every stat by 15. There's a catch though which won't appear until much later.

After getting outside, feel free to burn a Tent if you need to heal before entering the final portion of the caverns. Tellah will not get resurrected from using a Tent if you're curious.

In the final portion of the caverns, Cecil finally gets to using those precious dash boots (I just assumed jumping down the waterfall triggered it somehow), making the last two screens a quick endeavor to blast through. There's four chests to grab along the way containing a Black Helmet + Dark Armor & Gloves for Cecil along with Hermes' Sandals, a consumable that grants the user haste for a quicker ATB recharge rate.

Once you reach the next waterfall after the last two chests, be prepared for a boss fight against the beast known as Octomamm guarding the exit of this area.

Octomamm is only going to be a threat to Rydia. Despite the octopus being insanely fast to begin with, it does maybe 10-20 damage tops to Cecil. Real dangerous when he can hit for 200+ damage and gain ALL that back thanks to the Blood Sword.

As for Rydia, due to Octomamm's very high magic defense, she's best off defending, using a Potion to heal if her health falls below 50-60 hp. With any luck though, Cecil will have carved up the octopus before it gets to that point.

After the battle (and claiming some loot in the form of a Buckler), the exit is available.

Next time, Tellah gets to dispense some of his own unique brand of justice at Damcyan.
