Final Fantasy Legend II (via Collection of SaGa) playthrough Part 1
1Final Fantasy Legend II, or as it was originally, SaGa 2. The second in the GameBoy line. I had fun with the first one. It wasn't entirely my cup of tea, but I could definitely see why people enjoyed the games. And I liked the replay potential it had. This one as well gives us a large group of starting characters and sends us on our way, though three of those starters are monsters. We do have an added Robot this time out.
Replay value in RPGs is something that's getting further and further away the more RPGs focus on telling large, sweeping stories. But they don't have to be that. Sometimes you just want a nice, solid dungeon crawl. The same has happened outside of video games, Dungeons and Dragons having transformed to more of a story based, long term, invest in your characters game, where some of the original creators, such a Gygax, saw it as more of a board game. You roll up a character, throw it at a dungeon, and when that character dies you roll up another and try again. Hence why the fabled Tomb of Annihilation had so many unfair traps that were designed to straight up permanently kill your character. Because you were meant to just try again until you made it through.
Neither way is the wrong way to play. And, in the tabletop space, Dungeon Crawl Classics exists to recapture that original, more "board game" feel of Dungeons and Dragons. But I don't see that anywhere in video games. I would love to see a nice dungeon crawl style game, where you can select from a multitude of characters, classes, etc., and just run it through some - preferably randomly generated - dungeons. An RPG Roguelike. But not Mystic Tower style, something either JRPG or closer to dungeon crawlers like Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, or Legend of Grimrock.
