Final Fantasy II | Part 1: A New Hope Arises Within Chaos

One Final Fantasy game down, five to go. Now we move onto the second game in the franchise... and considered the black sheep as well. Welcome to Final Fantasy II.
I know what you're thinking. Which version? Let me get into details. This is the original Final Fantasy II, released on December 17, 1988 for the Nintendo Famicom. We would get a Final Fantasy II but it's actually a watered-down version of Final Fantasy IV. We wouldn't get the original FF2 until 2003, part of Final Fantasy Origins. After that, the game would be ported to the GBA, PSP, PC, iOS & Android and now PS4 & Nintendo Switch.
In terms of story and gameplay, it is completely different from the first game. Many that were involved in the first would return for the second such as Sakaguchi, Kowazu, Uematsu, Amano, Gebelli, etc. But in terms of story, it focuses on a group of individuals who join a rebellion that's currently at war against a powerful empire. Sound familiar? Well the plot of this game has elements from Star Wars, especially A new Hope.
The four main characters are Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon. I would say four but it's actually three since you'll be using Firion, Maria and Guy. Leon doesn't join until the very end. But the point is that these three will be your main party and your fourth member will join you depending on the story.
As for gameplay, it follows a nature vs nurture mechanic. Basically actions you do in battle will determine how your stats grow. In the original FF2 for the Famicom, it had a consequence. Basically an increase in one stat can lead to a decrease in another. To make matters worse, in order to level up your abilities and magic, you have to grind whether it be attacking enemies or your party. Not fun. Not only that but the Famicom and PS1 versions had an exploit that players can use to grind up levels to no end, the Target Cancel Bug. Sadly it's not in the more recent version. To make up for this, they removed the stat decreases allowing players even more freedom to customize how they want their party.
There's also a word memory system where characters can learn specific words from NPCs. In turn, the party can use said words to obtain information. It's useful if you want to know things but I find it interesting. Final Fantasy 2 also has many firsts and I will detail them in Part 2.
In terms of Part 1, we do a lot, grind a bit and team up with Minwu, a White Wizard who is a very useful mage to have in the early game. Of course this means we have much to do.
See you in Part 2 where the fight continues on as we head for Semitt Falls and free people from the Empire who are being used as slaves. Yeah. That's bad.
