Final Fantasy V - Part 7
01992 saw the release of FFV, a game that definitely utilised SNES hardware to create a graphically different-yet-familiar experience. It was certainly the nicest looking one to date, thanks to it's use of Mode7 capabilities to manipulate backgrounds and objects into doing some snazzy stuff. It's use of vibrant colour on environments, and detailed sprites for characters, monsters and creatures must have been something to experience on release. The remastered audio is excellent, but it's obvious that there didn't need to be as much tweaking as the earlier titles - and Uematsu hits it out of the park again.
So why was it passed over so much? Well, the story is either too light-hearted, safe and bland until a good 3rd or halfway through. Of all the earlier stories, this is the most by-the-numbers seen-it-before formulas, and there is no intricate stories and a lack of depth. It starts to pull you in around the point you meet the fantastic Gilgamesh, who despite again being lighthearted, was almost meta in his humour... but overall, it just isn't all that memorable. This would of course be followed by one of FF's narratives, but more on that next month.
With the above in mind, what they did do with FFV is completely overhaul the job class system that we saw in FFIII - and the customisation is probably among the best in the series. Late game, it becomes absolutely necessary to pull off that perfect formula of job classes and abilities whilst remembering that your tactics will have to change up with each big fight. This is what makes Final Fantasy V great, and a joy to play. Even when grinding to build a party to take down the mostrous Omega and Shinryu.
