Resident Evil: Code Veronica X - Part 2
After having such fun on the 2000 Dreamcast original, this was the driver in me actually parting with the cash for the next gen console.
Releasing Resident Evil 2 for the Saturn would have meant a huge drop in quality due to the technical limitations of Sega's PlayStation counterpart. Code Veronica was originally intended to be Resident Evil 3 for release on the newer Sega system. Due to Sony being protective of numbers, the spin-off that was Nemesis became the third in the series. The new hardware allowed full 3d backdrops and moving cameras as opposed to the static art used in previous games - and the characters could (almost successfully) show more emotion with moving facial parts and more detailed models.
The story stinks of early 2000s tropes, and is full of John Woo/Matrixesque action in cutscenes, and cheesy cringe-worthy dialogue and acting that really backs up the comment in the stream the other day that it's the "anime of the RE series". It follows Claire's capture after infiltrating an Umbrella Facility in Europe. You must work your way around Rockfort Island and it's military training facility, whilst uncovering the secrets of the weirdo Ashford family.
The puzzles are well designed, the weapons are fun, and the classic tank-controls and the positioning of the camera that follows Claire around (first seen in Dino Crisis) adds to the suspense, especially where an enemy is off screen. The atmosphere is also great for a game of it's time with the frantic soundtrack adding to the horror. Sometimes the game can be monotonous, with backtracking and certain frustrating encounters - and some of the better features like dodging in RE3 may have made it a more enjoyable romp. Pay no attention to the mid reviews that you find from critics, I enjoyed revisiting what many consider to be the last authentic Resident Evil. Now hopefully Capcom give it the treatment that 2, 3 and 4 have recently received.
