Story recap: After the castle explosion, Cid is despondent, and retires to the pub to drink in misery and solitude. Having nothing left to do in Karnak, and having a new route opened by the castle explosion, the party travels south to the Library of Ancients. The scholars of the library tell of monsters invading the lower levels of the library, and Cid's grandson, Mid, has disappeared below and hasn't come back. Many books in the library have been cursed with monsters who pop out of the pages looking for a fight. Deep beneath the library, they find Mid, so absorbed in a book that he doesn't even notice when they fight Biblos, an ancient demon who was sealed in a book 30 years ago by the wind crystal.

With Mid saved, they return to the top floor of the library. His book showed a way to power the fire ship without the fire crystal. He's excited to tell Cid right away, but when the party relays Cid's current status to him, he leaves in a hurry. They catch up with him at the pub in Karnak, where he manages to bring Cid out of his moping. Mid shares his discovery with Cid, and they leave to work on the fire ship so that the party can use it to look for the earth crystal.

While Cid and Mid work on the ship, the party rests up inside. Suddenly, Galuf has a flash of memory. Seeing Mid and his grandpa reminded him of an event from his past involving his own granddaughter. He reveals that he's from another planet, and had come by meteor to stop the evil spirit they'd sealed up 30 years prior from reviving itself. He and three other warriors had used the four crystals' power in the spot where they gather together to banish the black mage X-Death. The destruction of the crystals is undoing the seal, and Galuf's mission was to stop that from happening.

Galuf doesn't remember everything yet. Cid and Mid finish their work on the fire ship, and the party sets out with it in search of the earth crystal. They sail to the remote Crescent Town in the ocean, and suddenly find themselves in the middle of a violent earthquake. The fire ship drifts away from the island, and sinks into a nearby whirlpool, stranding them.

The earthquake passes, and they learn more about the island and town. Other than the occasional earthquake, it's a peaceful place with fertile soil. Every time an earthquake happens, the same whirlpool opens up. Townsfolk also tell of strange noises from underground. Black chocobos used to live in a nearby forest, but they're thought to be extinct. Visiting the forest, they find that there's still a black chocobo there. Bartz, having experience with Chocobos, catches up with it and mounts it. It starts to fly, but crashes back to the ground shortly afterward. Faris discovers that the chocobo has swallowed crystal shards that were blown in from the Karnak explosion, and gets the chocobo to cough them up. The chocobo regains its flying ability, giving the party a way to get off the island.
