Firearm Basics: I Bought My First Gun - What's Next?
You thought it through, did your research, watched Brownells videos - and you bought your first gun. You've joined the 100+ million Americans who own firearms. But now... what's next? Our guest host, competition shooter Tes Salb, says one thing you should NOT do is put that gun away in a gun safe and leave it there. A firearm is a tool, and like any tool, you need to learn how to use it properly and safely. The best way to do that is to take a class with a professional firearm instructor. The National Rifle Association has been teaching folks how to use firearms for the last 140 years, and the NRA courses in "Home Firearm Safety" and "The Basics of Pistol Shooting" are great for getting started. After the classes, it's time to visit your local shooting range and PRACTICE. Shooting is like any other physical skill: the more you practice, the better you get at it. Indoor ranges are weatherproof but usually limited to shooting handguns, while outdoor ranges have more space to shoot a greater variety of guns at longer distances. As you practice, you may find you enjoy shooting so much you want to do it regularly. The range is a great place to learn about opportunities for taking part in competitive shooting.
