And Firefox 83 is now available for download before the official launch.
Mozilla Firefox is the default browser for Ubuntu and other Linux systems, and generally, the latest version of Firefox is available as a security update on all supported versions of major Linux distributions, just after a few hours of Mozilla’s announcement, to the delight of its users.
Scheduled for November 17, the Mozilla Firefox 83 browser is now available for download on the official download server for all supported platforms, including Linux, Mac and Windows.
What's new in Firefox 83 now available.
The biggest new change in the release of Mozilla Firefox 83 appears to be a new security feature called HTTPS-Only Mode, which is implemented in Preferences, in the Privacy and security section.
It provides a secure, encrypted connection between your web browser and the websites you visit, even if they don't use HTTPS.
By default, it is disabled, but when enabled, HTTPS mode will only update all connections on your site to use secure HTTP (HTTPS). The good news is that it can be used on all windows or only on private windows.
For web developers, Firefox 83 provides support for CSS tapered gradients, the ability to toggle the pop highlight by clicking on the “scroll” badge for scrolling elements and a major update to Mozilla's SpiderMonkey JavaScript JIT engine that features a new builder MIR based on compiling CacheIR to MIR.
Codenamed Warp, the new JavaScript JIT engine is enabled by default in Firefox 83, making the browser faster in certain situations.
For example, Google Docs now loads up to 20% faster, according to Mozilla. If you can't wait until tomorrow's official release, you can download Firefox 83 binaries for 64-bit and 32-bit systems, as well as the source code, right now from Mozilla's FTP servers.
Another interesting change is the support for the WebRender feature to work on Intel notebooks with older drivers, as well as systems with Intel Gen12 GPUs, making Firefox more agile on these hardware.
Among other changes, Firefox 83 brings a new context menu item “Print selection”, new VPN card and banner in the Protections Panel to facilitate the use of a VPN solution to protect your privacy, as well as a new shortcut (Ctrl + Shift + B) to open the bookmarks toolbar.
In addition, the HTTP authentication prompt dialogs now use a tab mode instead of a window mode, a new option has been added in about: preferences to allow you to disable media control via keyboard, phone and virtual interface, and pinch gestures can now be used on touch screens and precision trackpads to magnify web content.
If you can't wait until tomorrow's official release, you can download Firefox 83 right now from Mozilla's FTP server .
How to install Firefox
As usual, you can download the latest version of Firefox from the official website, but, as always, I recommend that you update your installations from the stable software repositories of your favorite Linux distribution when Firefox packages appear.
