Tails stands for "The Amnesic Incognito Live System" and is a live operating system based on Debian GNU / Linux , which is primarily designed to preserve the anonymity and privacy of users as best as possible. Now the operating system including the new Linux kernel and known packages in version 4.13 has been released.
Debian 10 ("Buster") as a reliable basis
Tails 4.13 - which is based on Debian 10.6 ("Buster") - represents a complete operating system that can be used directly from a USB data carrier or a DVD - regardless of the operating system installed on the computer.
As such, the distribution not only includes the current Linux 5.8.10 operating system kernel, but also a large number of applications such as the LibreOffice office suite, the Mozilla Firefox browser and the Mozilla Thunderbird client.
Tails 4.13 can access a total of around 57,000 packages via the repositories of the stable branch of Debian. Gnome 3.30 is used as the desktop environment .
Apart from the current Linux kernel from August this year, which supports all current CPU and GPU architectures, Tails is less about up-to-date, more about data protection and privacy through anonymity.
All traffic goes through Tor
Tails includes various programs that have been preconfigured with security, data protection and privacy in mind: a web browser, an instant messaging client and an e-mail program, all of which are routed through the Tor network .
All software used under Tails is configured in such a way that it connects to the Internet via the Tor client. Applications that try to connect directly to the Internet are automatically blocked for security reasons.
The operating system also supports the use of alternative and publicly unlisted entry points into the Tor network, so-called Tor bridges , which make it more difficult - but not impossible - for Internet providers, for example, to determine that the user is using the Tor network.
Tails runs exclusively in memory
The Linux distribution is configured in the delivery state not to use the hard drive of the computer on which it is running. Not even when a sufficiently large paging file, swap , is available.
Tails runs exclusively in the main memory - which is automatically deleted when you shutdown - and on the USB storage medium. This is to prevent traces of the live system from being left on the computer that was running Tails 4.13. Tails thus belongs to the genus of memoryless ("amnesic") operating systems and by default discards all data on shutdown.
Whistleblower Edward Snowden has also mentioned and recommended the operating system many times in the past in his posts on Twitter in relation to its pioneering role in data protection.
