In this Mercury spacecraft, Alan Shepard made history on May 5, 1961, as the first American in space. In honour of the seven Mercury astronauts, he gave it the name "Freedom 7," and NASA designated the mission Mercury-Redstone 3. (MR-3). Shepard and his capsule were launched by a Redstone rocket, reaching a top speed of 5180 mph and an altitude of 116 miles. The voyage into suborbital space lasted 15 minutes, 28 seconds. Freedom 7 and Shepard were both recovered by helicopter after they parachuted into the water 302 miles from Cape Canaveral's launch site.
The Smithsonian received "Freedom 7" from NASA in October 1961, the first spacecraft used by humans to enter the National Collection. Additionally, it is the sole original type Mercury capsule flown by an aircraft.
