First Attempt - Intro & Turn 1 - S13 Priority Target
5Welcome to another What If playlist scenario, where some tactical alternatives will be explored for a specific scenario to evaluate whether these alternatives determine a different outcome.
In this episode we will use scenario S13 from Starter Kit2, which deals with the use of guns (ordnance).
The scenario is called Priority Objective.
Backgturn:
Corinth, Greece, April 26, 1941
To protect the flank of his future advance on the Soviet Union, Hitler invades the Balkans, where he advances rapidly.
Commonwealth forces made up of British, Australian, New Zealand and Greeks auxiliaries units comprising force W combat the German advance by trying to slow down the enemy's advance in all passes and natural fortresses.
If the allied units can withdraw and get past the Corinth Canal, which cuts across the Isthmus of Corinth that separates the Peloponnese from mainland Greece and destroy the only bridge that crosses this canal they will be relatively safe.
On April 20, Hitler authorized an operation to capture this bridge, trying to trap part of the retreating Allied units in the northern portion, allowing the passage of his panzers and trapping ANZAC units on the beaches.
For this battle, units from the Commonwealth forces and Greek units will combat the enemies constituted by elite units of German paratroopers.
The German attack on the Corinth Canal was given the name Operation Hannibal with the main target of the operation being the Corinth Canal Bridge.
The German forces considered that if the bridge could be captured and held, the planned Allied evacuation to either Crete or Egypt would be delayed if not stopped entirely.
The bridge itself however was held and defended by British and Australian troops and had been wired for demolition to block the canal.
The defenders were also equipped with eight 3.7-inch and eight 3-inch anti-aircraft guns along with 16 Bofors guns.
The attack plan would consist of German Fallschirmjäger assault engineers seizing both ends of the canal in a surprise glider assault while both battalions of the 2nd Fallschirmjäger Regiment were to parachute to the north and south of the bridge to neutralize any stationed Allied forces at the channel.
