"LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for “Linux Mint Debian Edition”. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead."

Linux Mint chief developer Clement Lefebvre reports in the monthly news in the Mint Blog about the upcoming beta phase of the "Linux Mint Debian Edition" LMDE 5. But first he clarifies the relationship between Linux Mint and LMDE.
Mint vs LMDE
On the one hand, the work on LMDE shows why Ubuntu is the better solution for Linux Mint, on the other hand, LMDE is proof of how easily you can change the substructure and how close you can stay to the current Linux Mint. An interesting part of developing LMDE is testing the in-house software developed for Mint against the Debian base. Compared to Linux Mint, however, the development of LMDE is not a priority, according to Lefebvre.
LMDE 5 largely completed
The LMDE 4 "Debbie" based on Debian 10 "Buster" will soon be followed by LMDE 5 "Elsie" based on Debian 11 "Bullseye". Work on LMDE 5 started early in January. LMDE 4 was already on par with the Mint, Xapp, and Cinnamon stacks introduced in 20.2. The patches applied to Ubuntu have been ported to LMDE 5 and updated to 20.3.
The result is slightly disappointing, Lefebvre jokingly notes, as it just feels like Linux Mint 20.3. Beneath the surface, however, it offers a Debian 11 base with more up-to-date software than Ubuntu 20.04 and gives developers a preview of some of the challenges they will face for Linux Mint 21. As far as the release of LMDE 5 is Concerned, the package base is in place, the image starts and can be installed. Critical bugs are not in sight, but a list of minor bugs needs to be worked through.
Beta in February
The beta for LMDE 5 should definitely appear in February. But they still want to look at possible improvements for the installer, the update and the new GNOME Screenshot App. As far as Linux Mint is concerned, the cycle has ended with the recently released Mint 20.3 , the next version will be version number 21, will be based on Ubuntu 22.04 and will probably be released in the summer.

Linux Mint Debian Edition "LMDE" continues to be developed in the event that Linux Mint itself which is based on Ubuntu would have to shift its base over to upstream Debian. Out today is LMDE 5 Beta.
LMDE 5 continues to be a development backstop in the event Linux Mint could no longer rely upon Ubuntu as its default package base. LMDE aims to be just like Linux Mint but with using upstream Debian packages instead of Ubuntu.
There isn't much yet to the release notes for LMDE 5 besides this release pulling in the latest Debian packages as well as the latest versions of those packages created/maintained by Linux Mint developers like the Cinnamon desktop. LMDE 5 is making use of Debian GNU/Linux 11 packages.
