First Look: The Gardener and the Wild Vines (Nintendo Switch)
0What to say about the Gardener and the Wild Vines...
A game that happened to cross my radar via Twitter about climbing up towers became one that I couldn't put down!
It's about tracking down true love, saving a prince from a tower (or, many towers), dispelling rumors, and learning more about yourself - that it's okay to be who you are...or not know who you are. Sometimes, figuring out who you are is not a destination to reach, but a journey in which you are formed.
There are many things about this game that exceeded my expectations. For one, the story in this game is one that I didn't expect to be as good as it was. The writing was witty, cheesy at times, and very wholesome throughout - a great combination. Did I mention there was romance? And social commentary, and redemption? It's like a rom-com mixed with an adventure story and I am 100% here for it.
What about the gameplay though? Yep, that too gets high marks from me. What I thought would be a decent platformer ended up throwing in multi-faceted challenges, puzzle-like sequences, races against time, and even a couple of secrets here and there. Not to mention there are loads of achievements to get for those completionists out there. The fact that everything controls well is truly just the icing on the cake.
Okay, so the game has story and gameplay, I guess that means the graphics are lacking, right? Well, no. While they may not be the modern look that you're used to, they are stylish and nostalgic. Partly the 2.5D style that has grown fond on most, set on PS1 style backgrounds, this game has a style unique to itself. While it may put some off for being a bit different, nobody can say that it's not artistic.
Honestly, I have very little that is negative to say about this game. I guess when you don't know what your expectations are going into the game, you tend to find the natural bar set itself at some point. This game pole vaulted over it and landed into the pad made of games I am most fond of in 2021. I look forward to what else Finite Reflection has in store for us in the future.
