BattleStorm, from Icy Studios is an arcade-style shoot-em-up game, inspired by the old 90s classics. With the movement and aiming of a twin-stick shooter, the hordes of enemies found in older games like R-Type and Ikaruga it demands that you be able to multitask at a frenetic pace. Enemies can come at you from the ground and the sky.

With a modern graphical style, the game is unique and features some interesting powerups such as explosive shells, cluster bombs and a nuke you can use to escape truly nasty situations.

Coupled with all this, the game expects you to maintain the highest combo multiplier possible if you want to make it onto the leaderboards. This first impressions was recorded after the first major patch from Icy, which fixed numerous complaints about the controls by our Station Manager Digmbot, who is a huge fan of shoot'em ups.

BattleStorm is definitely worth a look if you like old school SMHUPs, though you may want to consider waiting until it goes on sale.
