Fist of the Forgotten demo playthrough
Nathan "jitspoe" Wulf recently released a demo for this game (which is one of at least _two_ games he is currently working on). While I don't normally gravitate towards games of this genre, its focus on smooth movement mechanics had me at least curious enough to check it out.
The demo is pretty enjoyable. It doesn't err too far on the side of inducing frustration, and the motion physics seem pretty decent. Sure I had to retry things plenty of times, but I felt like for the most part the mechanics were working with me, not against me. (That is to say, I've seen various "physics-based" games in the past that felt wonky as heck, and this isn't one of those.) Also, jitspoe did a great job with the music, which complements the solemn landscape.
As the game is still early in development, there is of course room for improvement. One of the first things I noticed is that the camera can be jerky at times, particularly a second or so after you change the direction you're facing, and during a few cutscenes.
After finishing the demo, I tested out the timer and input overlays, which are both neat ideas, but the input overlays are maybe a little exceedingly large, and I was surprised at how the timers behave: total time doesn't seem to reset between save files within the same game session, but it also doesn't seem to persist across game sessions; I'm guessing there's more fine-tuning to be done on that feature.
