Join Rules Arbiter Steve as he discusses the issues with running monsters with extensive spell lists, and for a way to make it easier to manage, while managing all the other stuff that is expected of you while your running your game, and combat, more specifically. Sometimes your mosnjters have spells, or you want to add spellcasting to one of your Big Bad Monsters, but you don't want the hassle of looking up tons of spells in all the different books, or maybe the spells listed don't really give you the feel, and the threat your looking for. So instead of toiling through book after book trying to find that perfect spell, just make a few up, just for combat. So long as yopu consider what spells they should have at their level, you should be able to determine what is appropriate for the given range your thinking about. I especially like giving different ranges with different damage types, to keep things interesting.
