The first level of Flashback on PS3, played blind on the hardest difficulty.

This remake of the 1993 cinematic platformer classic was released in 2013 by Ubisoft. It's a mixed bag, there's plenty of good stuff here but it's marred by some serious performance issues, mostly in the last couple of levels.

The environments are given a decent graphical overhaul, with some nice detail that puts a new spin on the old 2D landscapes, bringing them to life in glorious 2.5D. The story has been fleshed out too and while the game follows the same basic structure as the original, with many of the same objectives, it changes things up a bit. For example, in this level the trade for the anti-grav belt is made with fruits found in the jungle, not credits.

The control scheme has been modernised and made more intuitive, including a completely revamped combat system, with aiming and charged shots (in the original you could only fire forward and couldn't aim your weapon). For this reason, I found the combat tougher in the remake, requiring more strategy and technical skill to win (at least on hard difficulty), but I found the action and platforming parts easier and smoother.

It's just a shame about the performance issues, the game runs OK until about level 4, then parts of it start to chug to nearly unplayable levels, you'll see for yourself if you watch the full playthrough.

I didn't learn what the "morph eyes" were until level 2, the game doesn't explain them. There are morph eyes in every level you can shoot, which will earn a skill point if you get them all. I get them if I see them, but I won't be getting them all as you can't always backtrack to ones you've missed, making it very hard to get them all in a blind playthrough. For what it's worth, they can't be collected permanently and will reset on NG+, there is no way to mop them up through a level select and no trophy for them either. There are also upgrades you can find, but it's impossible to get them all in a single playthrough.

Many of the trophies in this game are grindy, probably requiring at least a couple of playthroughs. The performance issues put me off of wanting to grind for trophies. My main goal in this playthrough was to get the hard difficulty gold and the one for completing all the optional VR missions, which I'll show in a bonus video. There is no platinum for this game.
