We released this video to archive a piece of history.

This is the official announcement/launch trailer for Dovetail Games' release of Flight Sim World.

You can read our coverage of Flight Sim World (FSW) here:

Flight Sim World was released by Dovetail Games on Steam and other platforms after they purchased and further developed the original FSX codebase from Microsoft. It was greatly upgraded including moving to a new 64-bit engine, full GPU utilization along with an upgrade to DirectX 11.

The platform was readied for new hardware and advanced systems. In theory, all of the existing FSX mods such as aircraft and scenery would have worked in this new sim (with slight modification) as it was based on the original FSX code.

Sadly, Flight Sim World flopped and they closed/stopped selling the project on the 24th of May 2018. Possibly not due to user disinterest but more of interest back again from Microsoft.

We predict this happened because Microsoft decided to buyback/take back the rights to FSX and the original codebase in preparation for the launch of the next-gen flight simulator "Microsoft Flight Simulator" or FS2020. You can read all of our coverage of this next-gen new sim here:

Microsoft Flight Simulator X is still available on Steam and we (hopefully) can see this continuing to be sold for "legacy" users even with the new Microsoft Flight Simulator (FS2020) release.

It should be noted that none of the original FSX/FSW aircraft or scenery add-ons will work with the new FS2020 sim out of the box - it has a completely different SDK, codebase, and add-on structure. If you want to stick with FSX/P3D based add-ons and have already moved to Prepar3D then check out our P3D page here:

... or failing that, you may have moved to X-Plane:

This video has been upscaled to 8K using special AI (artificial intelligence) technology and is not simply a resolution change/upscale. It has also been converted to 60 FPS. While the upscaling is not perfect (as we all know AI isn't perfect yet), it brings a piece of history back to life in a modern-resolution format.

We'd love to hear your comments on your thoughts of Flight Sim World... did you buy the release? Are you still using it? What made it special? What were your thoughts on it? Post them in the comments section below.
