Getting the correct nutrition and plenty of fluids is absolutely critical when soldiers are out in Afghanistan. But the food they get varies depending on where they are based once in Helmand. There are four cookhouses at Camp Bastion, 3 run by a catering company and one run by the military. Most of the chefs are from Sri Lanka and offer a great selection of meals. 90% of supplies come via ship then through Pakistan to Camp Bastion, but once a week, fresh produce is flown in. Over 4 ½ tonnes of fruit and veg is eaten a week in each cookhouse. On top of three meals a day, the troops have extra options for food and drink such as KFC, Pizza Hut, the NAAFI and Coffee Shops. Out on the ground however, there isn't so much choice and depending on the number of troops in a Forward Operating Base, their may only be one chef. Preparing three-meals a day on a 6 month tour means they have to be as creative as possible and cooking for 210 soldiers in the extreme heat and dust is a challenge. An Operation Point is even smaller than a checkpoint whereby soldiers take it in turns to cook.
