Ford Mustang Mach E Rally Testing
23In 2021, the Mustang brand expanded with Ford's introduction of the Mach-E, an all-electric four-door crossover that draws design inspiration from the classic Pony Car. Recently, Ford unveiled the Rally variant, an adaptation of the Mach-E designed for off-road challenges.
On a recent Tuesday, Ford revealed that they had constructed a dedicated rallycross track at their Michigan proving grounds. This development followed extensive preparation that included discussions with professional rallycross drivers and visits to various racetracks. Ford's engineers meticulously planned the track layout using computer simulations to assess potential speeds and timing, ensuring the course authentically replicates a rallycross environment.
The track serves a pivotal role in the development of the Mach-E Rally, facilitating a demanding 500-mile endurance test. This test simulates a decade of monthly rallycross competitions, pushing the vehicle's capabilities to their limits. The test results contributed to the Mach-E Rally's enhanced design, which features a 0.78-inch increase in ground clearance and introduces the new RallySport driving mode. This mode is specifically tuned for off-road conditions, offering increased control for navigating rough terrain through adjustments in throttle response and damping.
Despite these modifications for rugged terrains, the Mach-E Rally retains impressive performance characteristics. Equipped with a dual-motor setup, the vehicle boasts 480 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, enabling it to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 3.4 seconds. It also offers a respectable electric range of 265 miles as estimated by the EPA. The starting price for the Mach-E Rally is $61,890, which includes a $1,895 destination charge.
