I think the reason for Classic Sonics physics being so different and heavy in this game is cuz they wanted to emphasize platforming with his game. He never ends up going TOO FAST so you're never really at risk of accidentally running off a platform, but his start up speed is decent enough that you're not wading through mud until you hit top speed like it goes in the Genesis games, and he can stop on a fucking dime. It feels awkward and weighty if you're trying to speed along through a stage, but when you consider how it feels to do the platforming sections it actually feels pretty natural and helpful. Still kinda bizarre that they put something of a cap on his top speed though.
