Franzen is a free Retro style RPG available on Steam, it's got visuals that are dark enough to meet the theme of the story and it's short enough to be enjoyed in an evening or two : But it's got the guts to really get you excited and with the price tag of FREE, Franzen is the RPG you shouldn't miss out on.
With a 16-bit graphic style that pays respect to mega hits like Final Fantasy 6 or Final Fantasy 3 in America on the Super Nintendo, Franzen doesn't just hit you in the nostalgia alone, it has it's own cool story that you'll love.

One of the coolest things about Franzen is that it feels like a complete package for RPG fans but it's fast paced and doesn't waste any time, so you can jump right in and get into the story and the world right away. Let me read you the synopsis:
"Branzen. The Holy Lands. A world of Light and Dark. Flesh and Metal. The massive city, Akon, created by his holiness, Akanakon. A united, true empire. Or so it would seem..."
"Eighteen years ago, a terrible event happened. 'The Scream', a massive tear from which ceaseless darkness spewed. This darkness corrupts the mind and body, twisting those affected into monsters. 'Daemons', they call them."
Eighteen years since the 'Decade of Darkness', The Scream still stains the skies of Branzen. Franz and Lefsa Dellia, amateur Technomancers, are studying this strange phenomena, in an attempt to prove that it's expanding. Rapidly.
"Now, only one thing is true. The sun is setting on this world."
We've had a killer year here in 2023 for RPG fans : And this free Steam game Franzen is just the kind of icing on the cake you didn't know you needed.
Don't think just because this is a shorter game that it lacks substance : There is a lot to see and do here and what they've done is elimnated the grindy parts from a typical RPG of the era and replaced it with nothing but the good stuff : You'll be asking yourself : Why is this game free? I think the developer and publisher are making a name for themselves and want us all to see the raw talent they possess, and if that's the goal, they've succeeded.
Another thing I love about Franzen is it is a turn-based RPG : We don't get enough of these, and it's something I personally crave more of. Franzen delivers in it's promise to have Snappy Turn-Based combat in every sense.
Franzen is a mature game, it's themes are dark and twisted at times, but it has a moral compass as well, it's the story of a degrading social system and violence, it doesn't hold back, and I wouldn't recommend playing around children.
There is a lot of history to find in the RPG as well and it really shows throughout the game how well-thought the world and lore is, especially for a free indie title.
Franzen is another in the growing examples of Indie devs putting triple A studios to shame with a great RPG product that calls back to the old school 16-bit golden age of RPGs and Franzen stands on it's own as a great title all at once.
