It was probably the best tournament in the history of football. We had a group of death that pitted England with Portugal, Germany and Romania, we had holders France alongside the Netherlands and previous finalists Czech Republic in another group, Italy had a strong chance at winning, as did Spain who were given an easy group. France were hoping to emulate the West German side of the 1970s by winning successive international tournaments.
